April Wrap-Up

Books I read:

American Born Chinese - Gene Luen Yang

I've read this book twice before. This is definitely one of those books that gets better the more you read it. You pick up on these small things that you didn't catch the last time you read it. The book is told in three different perspectives. Each story becomes intertwined with the other ones. It's amazing how a graphic novel can show things in such a different light than a novel. You can't always picture things in a novel, but in a graphic novel, it shows you exactly what you need to see.

Persepolis Two - Marjane Satrapi

This was another graphic novel I read this month. I read Persepolis last month, so I decided to read the second part this month. I can't say which one I enjoyed more, they're both good for different reasons. This one captured my attention for longer, but the last one was probably more interesting. I wonder how that works.

Long Way Down - Jason Reynolds

Another good book I read this month! This has been a pretty good April. Long Way Down is written in poetry, but it doesn't feel dense like a poetry book. The pages look amazing. They aren't just plain white, and depending on where you are on the story, the colors and designs change. It's about a kid whose brother died. He has to follow "The Rules," which tells him that he has to kill the person who killed his brother. It takes place almost completely on an elevator, and each chapter is a different floor. Along with the pages looking great, he arranges the words in very creative ways, making you visually understand the point he is trying to make. You could read this book in two hours, tops.

Movies I watched:

"Avengers: Infinity War"

I've never seen an Avengers movie, but I have watched both "Guardians of the Galaxy," and loved them. When I saw that they were going to be in this movie, I decided to go. I went with my dad, my sister, and some friends. We all really enjoyed it. It was funny, moving, and very sad. Like, need something to cheer you up after you watch it, sad. Seeing this makes me want to watch other Marvel movies, so I know what my summer is going to look like.

4/5

"The Cat Returns"

As part of the year round Studio Ghibli fest, my dad and I saw "The Cat Returns." I'd have to say that this one wasn't one of my favorites. The story at the beginning was a bit slow, and just as it was getting good, it ended. It focused more on the wacky factor that all Ghibli movies have, but was lacking on the actual story. I did however enjoy watching a bunch of cats do human things.

Theater I attended:

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

As part of my sister's birthday, we went to Broadway to see this show. Wow, just wow. The show was incredible and there is no way to describe it properly. I feel like I can't even talk about the show without spoiling it. Just go see it if you get the chance.

5/5

Fiddler on the Roof

Some of our friends from Christmas Carol were in this show, so we decided to see it. I've seen the movie, but I've never seen it on stage. I really enjoyed it! It's so funny and our friend playing Tevia did so well. It's just a feel good musical, and I highly recommend going to see it when you get the chance.

Other things on my mind:

FL Studio

I've been working on more music lately. My goal is to do 12 songs this year. I spend more time on each song as I get better and understand the fundamentals of mixing a good tune. This was my first song with almost perfect mastering. It has some flaws in the production, but it's still my favorite I've done so far. You can listen to it here.

Peter Pan Jr.

I'm doing another show this year! I'm in Peter Pan Jr. with a whole bunch of friends. We started rehearsal in March, but we've been doing most of it in April. I play the roles of both a pirate and Mr. Darling, and I'm super excited to put on a great show!

We have plenty of catching up to do if you want to go back and watch old Marvel movies. I've been meaning to fill in the gaps myself, so this is good timing.

Glad you liked Long Way Down! I thought the design change was cool, too. I kept trying to find significance in the designs on the pages, but I couldn't really tell what it was. Could you?

This is a really good recap. I'm glad to see it was such a good month! I thought Long Way Down was great. I'm guessing you can see why I was so anxious for all of you to read it. And it sounds like you and your sister have something to do this summer. Maybe I'll crash the sibling time once in a while!

I am loving all of the music you are doing. I'll agree with you about this one--it's probably your best so far. And I'm also looking forward to seeing you in the show. From what I'm hearing, it should be a great production!

It pages mostly changed because of him entering the elevator. That's all I got from it, I just thought it was cool!

Great recap! You've read some really great books this month, that's for sure. Your assessment of them is similar to mine. I like hearing your thoughts on them.

Fun and really good song. It reminds me of a happy video game - the instrumentals and the sound effects, too. I'm so glad you're enjoying FL Studio!!

Excited for the show!! :D
